Dear all,
I want to keep your attention for the SCAR XXXIII Biennial Meetings and Open Science Conference session (Auckland, New Zealand, 2014):
"Bio-moorings and sediment cores: combined tools to indentify the role of natural and anthropogenic stressors on the polar marine ecosystem"
A fundamental mechanism for the atmospheric CO2 regulation is the CO2 sequestration efficiency of the biological pump. Understanding how the biological pump is responding to the anthropogenic environmental stressors is a crucial global issue. The combination of bio-mooring (by capturing the seasonality of ice-covered environments) and sediment cores (by describing the amplitude, rate and timing of natural variability in the system) is a powerful approach to distinguish between natural variability and human-induced changes (e.g. global warming and ocean acidification).
This session aims to bring together scientists from different backgrounds with an interest in bio-mooring array (e.g. long term sediment traps and other sensor devices) and sediment cores studies to describe the ecosystem responses to physical, chemical and/or biological change.
This should be a cross-disciplinary session encompassing biogeochemical, biological and paleo-ecology aspects and covering different time periods, from the geological to seasonal scales. Presentations that utilize long-term traps dataset and sediment cores records are encouraged but innovative study utilizing sensors and other sampling mechanisms installed on mooring arrays are also welcomed
Abstracts submission are now open!
