Dear colleagues,
We invite contributions to EUCOP4 session on Topography and microclimate effects on permafrost and seasonally frozen ground.
4th European Conference on Permafrost,18-21 June 2014 (Évora, Portugal) – http://www.eucop4.org
Abstract deadline: 15 December 2013
Chairs: Carla Mora (University of Lisbon, Portugal) and Miguel Ramos (University of Alcalá, Spain)
Key-note Speaker: Matti Seppala, University of Helsinki, Finland
Ground thermal regime is highly dependent on the effects of topography (altitude, aspect, morphology) and of other controls such as ground termophysical properties, changing snow cover and hydrological conditions, as well as on vegetation. From the interaction of these factors a set of topo- and microclimates generates, with varying influences on ground freezing, including permafrost distribution and characteristics. The correct characterization and understanding of microclimate processes is therefore essential to characterize the spatial distribution and temperatures of frozen ground, but microscale variability is frequently poorly understood and integrated in a limited way in detailed permafrost mapping and modelling.
This session focus in the analysis of observational data on climate and frozen ground from different settings on Earth, from seasonally frozen ground areas to the continuous permafrost zone, focusing on the controls of topo- and microclimate factors. It aims at bringing together climate, vegetation and permafrost scientists, including modelers, aiming at discussing the importance of ground truthing provided by high quality observational data, especially in complex terrain settings.
