Dear Colleagues,
Please see below a posting for a Ph.D. position at the Centre for Earth Observation Science at the University of Manitoba. Applications are due by August 20th.
JOB POSTING: Ph.D. position in sea ice-glacier interaction
Arctic sea ice and glaciers share complex interrelationships. Sea ice influences glaciers through its impacts on climate and on the calving and ice flow of tidewater glaciers. These dynamic impacts are enhanced when sea ice mixes with icebergs to form ice mélange. Glaciers influence sea ice through the input of liquid freshwater into coastal areas and the calving of icebergs. As both sea ice and glaciers evolve rapidly in a warming Arctic climate, these complex interrelationships are also evolving. We seek a Ph.D. student interested in studying this sea ice-glacier interaction using remote sensing and modelling tools. Possible methods include (but are not limited to) optical and thermal imagery, laser altimetry, radar, drone- and satellite-based photogrammetry, atmospheric and oceanic reanalyses, and climate and ocean modelling. This project will focus on areas near large glaciers flowing into Baffin Bay, including sites in Greenland and the Canadian Arctic. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Dr. Julienne Stroeve and Dr. Karen Alley. Candidates should ideally hold a Master's degree in Physical Geography, Geology, Oceanography, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field, but outstanding candidates holding a Bachelor's as their highest degree in one of these fields will also be considered. Desired skills include proficiency in a programming language (e.g. Matlab, Python), familiarity with remote sensing and GIS software, and strong writing and oral presentation skills in English. The start date for this project is flexible.
