A PhD and teaching assistantship in the geomorphology and/or ecology of glacier-fed mountain streams is available in the AlpWise Group at the University of Lausanne (www.unil.ch/alpenv) from the 1st September 2021. It is funded for 5 years, during which time the successful candidate will undertake PhD research whilst also providing some teaching assistance and support for AlpWISE activities.
The focus of the PhD research will be one of the following two themes
1. Sediment flux in partially glaciated catchments including on, through and under glaciers ; and between recently-deglaciated hillslopes and the valley floodplain ; potentially supported by novel methodologies such as seismics, active particle tracking, sediment provenance etc.
2. The relationships between glacier recession and the development of embryonic ecosystems, particularly in relation to macrozoobenthos, and including new ways of looking at functional connectivity in such environments and innovative new methods for data collection and analysis.
The successful candidate will have
• A Master's degree in a field that includes one or more of environmental sciences, ecology, physical geography or a specialist field such as geochemistry, river and catchment management, Alpine/Polar environments, glacial environments, or biodiversity and conservation.
• A strong background in the methods and/or techniques associated with either (1) or (2) above as well as excellent data analysis and quantitative skills including programming using languages such as Matlab, R or Python. They should have experience of data collection in field environments, ideally in isolated/mountainous settings.
• An excellent command of written and spoken English. The majority of teaching assistantship will be at Masters level and in English, but some classes at Bachelors level will require a basic understanding in French, to be acquired by the end of the first year of appointment.
