Dear colleagues,
We would like to announce our session "Home Base Permafrost: Human livelihoods and interactions with permafrost landscape dynamics" at the 11th International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP) 2016 in Potsdam, Germany, 20-24 June 2016.
This session is organized by the International Permafrost Association (IPA) Action Group "Permafrost and Culture" (PaC) and aims to integrate two hitherto disconnected scholarly approaches: on the one hand, geoscientific and environmental research on permafrost dynamics and hydrological processes, notably those on thermokarst processes and permafrost degradation in the light of global warming; on the other hand, social-scientific research on northern livelihoods, land use in permafrost regions, and local perceptions of environmental change.

Session abstract
Home Base Permafrost: Human livelihoods and interactions with permafrost landscape dynamics
Session Description:
Permafrost is a key factor of changing human-environment interactions in Arctic, Subarctic and high-altitude regions. Investigating permafrost processes clarifies not only the development of circumpolar biogeophysical systems but also local and regional socio-cultural dynamics. We propose to integrate two hitherto disconnected scholarly approaches: on the one hand, geoscientific and environmental research on permafrost dynamics and hydrological processes, notably those on thermokarst processes and permafrost degradation in the light of global warming; on the other hand, social-scientific research on northern livelihoods, land use in permafrost regions, and local perceptions of environmental change. We thus hope to develop a better understanding of sustained human involvement in permafrost landscapes – at different time scales and throughout the circumpolar region and Inner Asia.
We welcome contributions from all fields of science, covering diverse methodological approaches such as interviewing and participant observation, field-process studies, monitoring programs, remote-sensing analysis, and modelling. We also hope to include outlines of existing and planned interdisciplinary collaborations, outreach programs, and participatory research on land use in permafrost regions. Ultimately, this session seeks to enlarge the thematic scope and local embeddedness of future research in diverse permafrost landscapes.
