Dear Colleagues,
At this year's AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, we will be convening a
session entitled
C039: THE CRYOSPHERE AND SEASONAL TO DECADAL PREDICTION
You can find details below or at
http://tinyurl.com/d3555c3
Please consider submitting an abstract to C039 by the deadline of
***AUGUST 8, 2012***, and encourage your colleagues to do so as well. It
promises to be an exciting and highly relevant session.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Regards,
Paul, Seok-Woo, Mark and Marika

This session solicits current research on prediction of the cryosphere
from seasonal to decadal timescales. The session considers 1) prediction
of cryospheric variables like sea ice and seasonal snow cover and 2)
what improved cryospheric prediction means for regional and global
climate prediction. For 1), papers are sought that discuss statistical
relationships as well as the dynamical role of accurate initialization
and representation of polar Earth System processes (sea ice, polar
ocean, seasonal snow cover, atmosphere, etc.). For 2), papers are sought
on cryospheric prediction in the context of extratropical weather
systems, teleconnected modes coupled to cryospheric variability, and
cryospheric feedbacks that affect global climate.

The Conveners of session C027 ?Observational Needs for Polar Climate Modeling? announce a call for abstracts.
Session description:
Polar observations for climate model evaluation and development are lacking due to short instrumental records, remote & harsh environments, and challenging conditions for satellite retrievals. This session encouragescontributions that (1) Illustrate the need for and value of process- or climate- scale observations using modeling, data assimilation, and/or process understanding; or (2) Assess and compare observational data sets of uncertain variables such as precipitation, clouds, & sea ice thickness; or (3) Use novel methods and metrics to address questions of observation quality and utility; or (4) Propose observational campaigns that can constrain climate-relevant processes in climate models.
