[CRYOLIST] Postdoc position in glacial seismic stratigraphy at Aarhus University

The Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 2.5-year postdoc position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to work with seismic mapping and glacial seismic stratigraphy around Greenland in order to infer 1) long-term ice-sheet evolution and 2) quantify depositional volumes to assess glacial landscape evolution in Greenland.

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a newly established research group working to assess and quantify long-term ice-sheet evolution and glacial landscape formation in Greenland since ice-sheet inception. More broadly, the project aims to understand the influence of erosion and deposition on solid- Earth deformation, ice-sheet stability, and sea-level change.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Earth sciences, geophysics or similar. The applicant should have proven research experience and academic publications within seismic mapping and seismic stratigraphy. The ideal candidate has experience with glacial seismic stratigraphy around Greenland or other ice-sheet settings.

The desired starting date is September 1, 2023.

[CRYOLIST] Landscapes Live Seminar (2 March): Maya Stokes (Florida State U)

Dear All,
Landscapes Live is pleased to announce the next Landscapes Live online seminar with Dr. Maya Stokes (Florida State University) this Thursday, March 2nd at 16:00 CET (Amsterdam/Berlin/Paris).
Geologic mechanisms of freshwater fish speciation in the southeast United States
The high biodiversity of mountain ranges across Earth suggests a link between geologic processes and biological evolution. Topographic uplift has been linked to the diversification of both terrestrial and freshwater species in many tectonically active landscapes. However, tectonically inactive mountain ranges also host exceptional levels of freshwater biodiversity. In this talk, I discuss how the erosional exhumation of ancient geologic structures has influenced landscape dynamics and driven the diversification of freshwater fish in the Appalachian Mountains. As rivers erode through layers of different kinds of rock, the spatial distribution of rocks at the surface of the landscape changes. Thus, for fish with habitat specificity linked to rock type, erosion can progressively expose either favorable or unfavorable rock types, creating either barriers or corridors. I utilize geologic and phylogenetic datasets to test these scenarios in darter species endemic to the southeast United States. The results demonstrate how erosion can drive the diversification of freshwater organisms in ancient mountain ranges long after tectonic activity ceases.
The seminar will be live on Zoom and open to anyone interested (limit of 500 participants). Register in advance for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwrdeuvrTspHtz81lfV6p5E2PSvI0FedUMeAfter registering, you should receive a confirmation email containing the information you need to join the meeting.

[CRYOLIST] ACDC-GRISO summer school 2023: Past and future changes in Greenland climate

Dear Colleagues,

The Advanced Climate Dynamics Courses (ACDC) and the Greenland Ice Sheet Ocean science network (GRISO) will host a joint summer school at Arctic Station in Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland, from 20th August to 2nd September 2023.

The topic is "Past and Future Changes in Greenland Climate". Through lectures and group work the summer school will cover science areas including Greenland Ice Sheet dynamics, ice sheet history, atmospheric dynamics, ice sheet-climate interaction, North Atlantic/Arctic oceanography, fjord dynamics, ice-ocean interactions, regional climate history and proxies. There will also be opportunities for hiking and to experience oceanographic data and sediment core collection. More broadly, the summer school aims to develop skills in cross-discipline collaboration and communication, and to build a strong and healthy early-career science network.

Confirmed lecturers so far include Fiamma Straneo, Kerim Nisancioglu, Donald Slater, David Battisti and Camilla Andresen.

The target audience for the summer school is advanced graduate (PhD) students, and applications from those who have recently completed PhDs will also be considered. We are able to accommodate around 20 students.

Applications are now open and will close on 15 March 2023. We encourage applications from Greenland-based students and underrepresented minority groups.

Full information including costs and details of how to apply can be found on both the ACDC website (https://www.uib.no/en/rs/acdc/160261/acdcgriso-2023) and GRISO website (https://griso.ucsd.edu/acdc-griso-summer-school-2023-past-and-future-changes-in-greenland-climate/).

We hope to see some of you this summer!

Dear Colleagues,

The Fifth Space for Hydrology Workshop will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from Monday 27 November to Friday 1 December 2023.

The European Space Agency, in the context of the "Earth Observations Science for Society" Programme, and CNES are organising a sequel joint event to Hydrospace2021 and EO4Water2020, called 5th Space for Hydrology Workshop. This time around the Hydrospace Workshop is organised in collaboration with GEWEX (and other sponsors to be confirmed), seeking opportunities to explore joint solutions with a broader view on key science questions for Research and Development, up to Operational use of remote sensing information. The aim of getting together during 5 days in a brainstorming workshop-style is to strengthen the collaboration between the four critical water communities: in situ, modelling and space observation scientists as well as "non-scientific" users such as water managers to address the needs of the application community.

Please SAVE-THE-DATE!

Soon you will be invited to submit your abstract(s) for an oral or a poster presentation.
The deadline for submitting your abstract(s) will be 3 September 2023.  (Mark that date too!)

No participation fees will be charged. Participants are expected to finance their own travel and accommodation expenses. The working language of the workshop is English.
