Dear Cryolist community,
We invite you to join an online workshop to discuss current and future research opportunities of the Denman-Scott Glacier system, East Antarctica.
We welcome published and unpublished contributions from glaciology, geophysics, geomorphology, oceanography, biological proxies, geology, and atmospheric science.
Please submit expressions of interest and abstracts via https://forms.gle/1Hgse3f2owDxRWqBA by Friday 2nd October 2020.
Further details are below.
Best wishes,
Workshop organising committee
Andrew Mackintosh (Monash University), Matt King (University of Tasmania), Richard Jones (Monash), Felicity McCormack (Monash), Sarah Thompson (UTAS), Duanne White (University of Canberra), Ross Whitmore (Monash)
Overview
The Denman-Scott is a dynamic glacial system which has undergone observable changes in recent decades, including: mass loss, grounding line retreat, and ice sheet thinning. Recent evidence points to a deeply incised channel beneath the marine-terminating Denman ice stream, with potential for incursion of warm ocean waters.
This multi-disciplinary workshop seeks to bring researchers together with an interest in the Denman-Scott system, including constraints from the adjacent Bunger Hills. This workshop will assess the evidence for past and present change to this region, and review its sensitivity to evolving ocean and climate drivers. To understand the future response of the Denman-Scott system requires a cross-disciplinary approach, and we welcome contributions relating to the ocean, ice, climate, and geology of the Denman-Scott area.
Aims
Review evidence for mass loss change in the Denman-Scott system since the Last Glacial Maximum
Understand the current trends, including processes that are driving change
Discuss the sensitivities of the system to future climate change
Dates & Structure
Early November 2020 (3-6 Nov)
The workshop will occur over two/three half days, with the times differing on each day to best accommodate different time zones.
The workshop is an online event, and will consist of both oral presentations and open discussion.
Desired Outcomes
Grow and link the broad community working in the region around Denman Scott Glacier in East Antarctica.
Funding applications to multiple national programs from groups aligned with this workshop.
