We seek two postdoctoral researchers for an integrated, multi-disciplinary study of Helheim Glacier, East Greenland. The selected candidates will work within a broad research team with expertise spanning ocean and ice sheet/ocean interactions to surface ice sheet hydrology and large-scale Arctic atmospheric processes. The positions will divide across ice sheet modeling (UC Irvine) and fjord ocean modeling (Oregon State University). These institutions represent a subset of many working on this project, and the expectation will be for close collaboration both amongst multiple institutions and across disciplines. The ultimate aim of the project is to improve understanding of processes occurring at the marine margin of Helheim Glacier, East Greenland in order to constrain the mechanisms that drive glacier dynamic and mass variability. The start dates for both positions is Spring 2020 or soon thereafter.
Fjord Modeling: This position will be located at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. The appointment is initially for one year with an expectation of a second year upon demonstration of satisfactory progress. The successful candidate will formulate and analyze high-resolution ocean-ice coupled simulations to explore the physical processes regulating heat and freshwater delivery within the Sermilik fjord. Applicants must have completed a PhD in oceanography or closely related area by the start of the project. Those with experience with numerical modeling are encouraged to apply. Applicants must submit a single pdf containing 1) a cover letter, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) names and contact information for three professional references, and 4) a research statement describing academic achievements and future directions to Emily Shroyer (emily.shroyer@oregonstate.edu). Ice Sheet Modeling: the postdoc opportunity is at UCI (Irvine, California) under the supervision of Mathieu Morlighem (http://sites.uci.edu/morlighem/) and will rely on the Ice Sheet System Model (http://issm.jpl.nasa.gov) developed jointly with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The term of appointment at UCI is initially for 1 year with an extension to up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory progress and available funding UCI. Applications are invited from creative self-motivated candidates with a deep interest in Earth systems modeling/science. The exact requirements for each post are listed on the web page, but applicants must have completed a PhD in glaciology, applied mathematics, geophysics, or closely related areas by the start of the project. Applicants must also be interested in working in a collaborative environment on computationally intensive projects. Further information about the ice sheet modeling post, and how and to apply, can be found at: https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF05944. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Mathieu Morlighem (mathieu.morlighem@uci.edu).
