[CRYOLIST] 2 PhD positions on the impacts of climate change on high alpine geosystems. At the Cath. University of Eichstaett Ingolstadt, Germany

Hi

It would be very nice, if you could publish this announcement for two
PhD positions:

Kindest regards

Florian

Dear Cryolist members

At the Physical Geography of the Cath. University of Eichstaett
Ingolstadt, we are happy to announce the opening of two PhD positions:

The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)
are funding an interdisciplinary research unit that investigates the
sensitivity of high alpine geosystems to climate change (SEHAG).
Photogrammetric analysis of historical photographs, climate and
hydrological modelling, and geomorphological measurements are used to
reconstruct the evolution of three central alpine catchments since the
end of the Little Ice Age (c. 1850 AD).

Within the framework of the research unit, we, the Chair of Physical
Geography at the Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingostadt, seek
motivated and capable graduates for two part-time (36 months, 62.5 %
each) funded PhD opportunities on the following topics:

Reconstruction and analysis of the activity of debris flows and
gravitational mass movements, their relation to hydrometeorological
triggers and climatic changes since 1850, their interaction with other
processes, and their role in sediment cascades

Reconstruction and analysis of nival and periglacial processes
(including snow avalanches and rock glaciers) and their relation to
climatic changes since 1850. Analysis of the temporal evolution of
(proglacial) lakes and their role as sediment traps.

The successful candidates should have a MSc degree in geography,
geosciences or neighbouring disciplines, with a focus on process
geomorphology/earth surface processes. They should be ready to organise
and conduct geomorphological fieldwork and visits to historical archives
in order to retrieve historical imagery (driver's license required).
Data analysis includes photogrammetry (SfM, monoplotting) of present-day
and historical photographs, LiDAR data acquisition and processing, 3D
point cloud analysis and GIS-based digital morphometry. Experience with
a programming/scripting language is beneficial. We are keen to publish
results in international peer-reviewed journals and to present them at
national and international scientific meetings; very good English
presentation and writing skills and basic German communication skills
are required. The successful candidates will be firmly embedded not only
into the Chair's working group (with other PhD students and senior
scientists) but will be in close collaboration with the other working
groups of the SEHAG consortium (TU Vienna, TU Munich, Universities of
Innsbruck and Bremen). This includes joint fieldwork, regular meetings
and optionally guest residence at other institutions.

Requests for more information and applications can be directed via
e-mail to the head of the working group Prof. Dr. Michael Becht
(michael.becht@ku.de) by February 10th, 2019.

Kindest regards
Michael Becht, Florian Haas, Tobias Heckmann
