[CRYOLIST] PhD opportunity - studying sedimentation processes in a glacial fjord - deadline October 14

Dear Cryolist Subscribers,

there is a PhD opportunity in a project concerning sedimentation processes due to receding glaciers in Hornsund fjord, Svabard (Arctic).

Short introduction:

The proposed Ph.D. topic relates to the analysis of sedimentation processes in the changing polar fjords environments as a result of the recession of the glaciers. It is one of the key issues for analyzing polar fjords' productivity. Productivity of marine ecosystems is an important factor conditioning element and organic matter cycling on Earth. It also has the potential to influence the composition of the atmosphere and thus to shape our climate. The world's oceans are a great source of O2 and sink for atmospheric CO2 because they absorb about 22% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions and therefore limit global warming and all its consequences. The Arctic Ocean, due to its relatively high productivity and low water temperatures enhances CO2 solubility, and is responsible for as much as 5-14% of the global CO2 uptake by marine regions. This makes the Arctic marine ecosystems important components in the global carbon cycle. Recent findings show that Arctic fjords are especially effective in absorbing atmospheric CO2. The biogeochemistry of the fjord systems is, however, very complex and not yet fully understood. The great unknowns that remain include the effect of glacial retreat on the CO2 budget of coastal waters. Climate change is disproportionately strong in the Arctic, which is the most rapidly warming region on Earth. One of the observable consequences of the transformation of the Arctic environment is the rapidly receding glaciers, which are leaving behind new bays. Due to glaciers calving, submarine melting and drainage of meltwater through glacial outflows, glaciers are recognised as the main source not only of freshwater supply into the fjord, but also mineral, organic matter and nutrients.

Here is the official announcement with all the details:

Please click the project title: "Influence of glaciers recession, from tidewater to land-based, on the fiord sedimentology".

[CRYOLIST] PhD opportunity - studying glacier calving in the Arctic - deadline October 14

Dear Cryolist Subscribers,

there is a PhD opportunity in my project "Studying glacier calving fluxes and calving styles through a novel combination of acoustic and optical methods", funded by the National Science Centre (Poland). The preliminary PhD thesis title is "Quantifying temporal and spatial variability of glacier calving in Hornsund fjord, Spitsbergen".

Short introduction:

Recent studies have demonstrated that the glacier mass loss due to calving can be measured using the underwater noise generated as icebergs impact the sea surface (see, for example, https://lnkd.in/dwQvcvkB). Using this knowledge and supporting acoustic methods with modern optical techniques and oceanographic measurements, the project aims to answer two major questions:

1. What is the impact of distinct calving mechanisms on the glacier mass loss under different environmental conditions?

2. Can we use passive acoustics combined with optical remote sensing as a key for efficient monitoring of glacier mass loss due to calving?

The implementation of the doctoral dissertation will make a significant contribution to answering these questions by analysing the spatial and temporal variability of the glacier calving processes in Hornsund fjord. Different kinds of variation will be considered: seasonal, inter-annual, along glacial termini, and between the selected glaciers in Hornsund fjord, Svalbard. The successful candidate will analyse archival and newly collected acoustic, oceanographic, photogrammetric, and other data. The PhD student will collaborate with international partners from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego (USA) and National University of Singapore under the International Partnership for the Acoustic Monitoring of Glaciers (IPA OMG). He/she/they will participate in Arctic field work, international conferences and internships/summer schools.

Here is the official announcement with details:

Please click the project title: "Quantifying temporal and spatial variability of glacier calving in Hornsund fjord, Spitsbergen". Important: schedule and procedures available in "more information" below the announcement.

The deadline for application is October 14.

[CRYOLIST] 3-year Postdoc Position Water Permafrost Interactions in Poland

We would like to attract your attention to a 3-year Postdoc position related to water – permafrost interactions.

The candidate will join the group implementing the project NCN SONATA BIS "Applied remote sensing and geophysical imaging in recognition of the changes of the water balance in High Arctic catchments" at the Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences. The main objective of the project is a comprehensive water balance study in two High Arctic mountainous catchments located in Svalbard to investigate the heterogeneity in the cryo-hydro-meteorological conditions and their seasonal dynamics.

We propose an integrated approach taking into account the freeze-thaw cycles of water in the soil, to describe and model hydrological processes. These cycles influence river discharge by changing the hydraulic properties of the soil and by either contributing to or preventing infiltration. It is planned to use cryo-hydro-geological models for a better understanding of processes linking hydrology and permafrost under varying climatic conditions. In particular, we would like to analyse (i) an influence of active layer thickness on the surface and near-surface water storage, drainage, and routing; (ii) test the effect of surface water, soil moisture, and groundwater on permafrost distribution and degradation; (iii) analyse how active layer thickness changes in the past have altered observed discharge patterns; (iv) and how future permafrost degradation will influence the hydrological regime.

Requirements

1.            PhD in Earth sciences or related sciences obtained a maximum of 7 years before starting work on the project. It is allowed to submit applications by persons who obtain a doctoral degree before the date of commencement of work.

2.            The candidate should have knowledge of permafrost and hydrology and will be expected to work partially in the Arctic.

3.            The ideal candidate should be familiar with hydrological measurements, remote sensing methods, geophysical methods, statistical data analysis, and be familiar with programming (MATLAB, R, Python) and GIS (e.g. ArcGIS).

4.            Experience in hydrogeological modelling and/or modelling of perennial permafrost and/or cryo-hydro-geological modelling (eg CryoGRID 3, ATS).

5.            Fluent English enabling the presentation of results at international conferences, communication, reading and writing scientific papers.

6.            Outstanding scientific achievements.

7.            Motivation for scientific work.

Conditions of employment:

1.            The amount of funds for employment is PLN 10,000 gross / month (which is approximately PLN 6,000 net)

2.            Stage dimension: full time

3.            Employment period - 36 months

4.            Employment is planned from 1st of November 2022

5.            According to the NCN conditions, during the employment period, a post-doc may not receive any other remuneration from the NCN funds.

The work will be carried out under the supervision of:

Dr. hab. Marzena Osuch (marz@igf.edu.pl) and dr. Tomasz Wawrzyniak (tomasz@igf.edu.pl), Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences
