[CRYOLIST] EGU 2018, Rapid changes in sea ice: processes and implications, CR6.1

Dear Colleagues,

Happy New Year!

We cordially invite you to contribute to the following session as part of the EGU General Assembly (8–13 April 2018, Vienna, Austria):

Rapid changes in sea ice: processes and implications, CR6.1

Convenors: Danny Feltham, Daniela Flocco, Andrew Wells

In 2012 the Arctic summer sea ice extent was the lowest in satellite history, exceeding the previous low in 2007. In fact, the last 11 years (2007 to 2017) have seen lower Arctic summer sea ice extents than in the previous 29 years of satellite records. While the changes in the Southern Ocean sea ice cover have not been so dramatic, there has been a redistribution of sea ice and a slight net increase in recent years, with the low of 2016 being a dramatic exception. Climate projections suggest a reduction of the sea ice cover in both poles, with the Arctic becoming seasonally ice free in the latter half of this century.

The scientific community is investing considerable effort in organising our current knowledge of the physical and biogeochemical properties of sea ice, exploring poorly understood sea ice processes, and forecasting future changes of the sea ice cover.

In this session, we invite contributions regarding all aspects of sea ice science and sea ice-climate interactions, including snow and sea ice thermodynamics and dynamics, sea ice-atmosphere and sea ice-ocean interactions, sea ice biological and chemical processes, and sea ice models. A focus on emerging processes and implications is particularly welcome.

Deadline for abstracts: 10 Jan 2018, 13:00 CET

We look forward to seeing you all in Vienna.

Best wishes,

Danny, Andrew, Daniela

[CRYOLIST] EGU Session CR5.4/OS1.16 Ice shelves and tidewater glaciers - dynamics, interactions, observations, modelling (co-organized)

Dear All,

With the end-of-year holidays over and many of the cold, dark winter days still ahead of us, what better time to plan a visit to the 2018 European Geosciences Union General Assembly, to be held in Vienna, Austria, during the week of 8-13 April 2018?

The deadline for abstract submission is fast approaching, next Wednesday, 10 January 2018, at 13:00 CET.

You will have seen many emails already, highlighting aspects of the diverse scientific programme, but we would like to draw your attention to a session co-organised by the Cryospheric Sciences and Ocean Sciences divisions on:

Ice shelves and tidewater glaciers - dynamics, interactions, observations, modelling

For further details and a link to online abstract submission, please visit http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2018/session/26466

For a flavour of what to expect, take a look at last year's oral (http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2017/orals/22820)  and poster (http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2017/posters/22820) programmes.

We hope to have an equally exciting programme this year and look forward to receiving contributions.

We hope to see you in Vienna.

Kind regards from the CR5.4/OS1.16 convenors,

[CRYOLIST] EGU 2018 Environmental Seismology session GM2.3/CR2.6/GI3.15/GMPV10.3/HS11.18/NH4.6/SM 1.04/SSS13.22

Dear colleagues,

Happy New Year!
The abstract submission deadline for the 2018 EGU is fast approaching.
Therefore, we would like to take the liberty again to invite you to submit an abstract to the EGU 2018 session on Environmental Seismology.

The EGU General Assembly 2018 that will take place in Vienna from 08–13 Apr 2018.

* SESSION:
GM2.3/CR2.6/GI3.15/GMPV10.3/HS11.18/NH4.6/SM 1.04/SSS13.22
Environmental Seismology:
Deciphering Earth's surface processes with seismic methods (co-organized)
Convener: Anne Schöpa  | Co-Conveners: Wei-An Chao, Velio Coviello, Florent Gimbert, Andrea Manconi

* ABSTRACT SUBMISSION:
The deadline for the receipt of abstracts is Wednesday, 10 January 2018, 13:00 CET.

* CONFIRMED INVITED SPEAKER:
Piero Poli, MIT

* SESSION DESCRIPTION:
Seismic techniques are becoming widely used to detect and quantitatively characterise a wide variety of natural processes occurring at the Earth's surface. These processes include mass movements such as landslides, rock falls, debris flows and lahars; glacial phenomena such as icequakes, glacier calving/serac falls, glacier melt and supra- to sub-glacial hydrology; snow avalanches; water storage and water dynamics phenomena such as water table changes, river flow turbulence and fluvial sediment transport. Where other methods often provide limited spatial and temporal coverage, seismic observations allow recovering sequences of events with high temporal resolution and over large areas. These observational capabilities allow establishing connections with meteorological drivers, and give unprecedented insights on the underlying physics of the various Earth's surface processes as well as on their interactions (chains of events). These capabilities are also of first interest for real time hazards monitoring and early warning purposes. In particular, seismic monitoring techniques can provide relevant information on the dynamics of flows and unstable slopes, and thus allow for the identification of precursory patterns of hazardous events and timely warning.

This session aims at bringing together scientists who use seismic methods to study Earth surface dynamics. We invite contributions from the field of geomorphology, cryospheric sciences, seismology, natural hazards, volcanology, soil system sciences and hydrology. Theoretical, field based and experimental approaches are highly welcome.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

* EARTH SURFACE DYNAMICS SPECIAL ISSUE:
"From process to signal - advancing environmental seismology"
You are also invited to submit your scientific papers to this special issue until the end of July 2018.

Sincerely yours,
the session conveners

Re: [CRYOLIST] Open Access Polar and Cryospheric Remote Sensing Data Survey

Hi Cryolist,

Just a reminder to please submit your satellite and data suggestions by the end of the week. The deadline is Friday 5 January 2018 (not, in fact, a year ago as I originally wrote.

Happy New Year!

Dear Cryolist,

As part of an upcoming special issue on Cryospheric Remote Sensing, we are updating our paper on "Open Access Data in Polar and Cryospheric Remote Sensing." This paper was intended both as reference for those teaching/joining the field and a state-of-the-science commentary. Since its publication in 2014, I know there has been a HUGE proliferation of further satellites, innovative techniques, and new datasets.

If you have a particularly useful satellite or dataset in mind (your own or another that you use, current or upcoming), it would be very much appreciated if you took a minute to fill out this quick form to make sure it gets included: https://goo.gl/forms/lFxeqQqKYP3Vr9DW2

The deadline for submissions is 5 January 2017. Thank you for your help in making this a strong reference for the community!
